Legislative Update: Jan 30, 2007
By: Prospector
At the end of the day last Friday I had a full schedule
for today as I had hoped. However, after a flurry of late-afternoon phone calls
yesterday canceling and rearranging, I ended up with seven appointments as of
9AM today; one minority Senator, three new Assemblymen, and three
minority Assemblymen. One of those cancelled at the last minute. So pretty
much business as usual. I had some
very good discussions and was told by one Assembly staffer, " I respect that you guys are so organized". My
last meeting ended up being over an hour long (good thing it was the last) as
I met with an Assembly staff member who rides and who wanted as much as
possible in the way of information to discuss
with his boss.
As I reported last week, our friend, Assemblyman John Lavelle of Staten
Island passed away and session
was cancelled yesterday out of respect. I went to his office to express our
condolences, but, not surprisingly, it was closed. I will try again next
week. On another sad note, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, representing the Saratoga area, lost her son in a motorcycle accident in Florida over the weekend. She rides herself and has been supportive of
our bills. I will also try to see her
next week. Some of the new bills have
been printed and I was able to get copies of them today, but have not had a
chance to go through them yet, so I will pass on that information in a day or
two.
The Assembly Transportation Committee met today, but as
there was nothing of interest to us on the agenda and I had another
appointment at that time anyway, I
did not attend. I
also had better luck making appointments today, with friends in Senate
Offices being most accommodating. Right
now I have seven appointments for next Tuesday and two for Feb 13th.
Hopefully I will still have at least seven come Tuesday morning, and of
course, I will continue to fill the calendar for the
13th as well. All
in all, a pleasant day today with expressions of support for our issues.
If anyone has a question regarding a specific legislator,
feel free to call me at any time for his/her position on an issue.
