Legislative Update: June 20, 2006By: Prospector

| Chris Farrington joined me again today for the last lobby day of the legislative session. The only appointment was with Assemblywoman Markey from Queens to discussour disagreement with A11482 which would prohibit children under 12 from riding as a passenger on a motorcycle. I'm not sure we made much of an impression, but since it's a one-house bill, I'm not too concerned yet. We'll just have to keep an eye on it. We visited Senator Robach's office to be sure they knew the YROW bill had passed the Assembly and it was now up to them to get it moving in the Senate. We weren't able to speak to his counsel as she was on the phone, so we left a message. As everything was going fairly smoothly, with no sign of any drastic action needed on our part, I decided we might as well call it a day. Chris wanted to stop and see several Senators from his district on the way out, so we went to Senator Bonacic's office where we were told the YROW bill had passed the Senate. I guess we blinked and missed it and nobody called me. So my information at this point is that the bill is finally on its way to the Governor after a 4-year effort. We will send a letter of support to him, but I see no reason why he won't sign the bill (famous last words). I was just interrupted by a 9:30 PM phone call confirming that the YROW bill passed the Senate yesterday afternoon while we were watching the Assembly. So it turned out to be a laid-back day after all and our YROW bill is finally where we want it. On my way out I stopped at the Office of General Services and obtained the paperwork for the Capitol steps for Freedom Rally 2007. I hope everyone has a great Summer, Ride Safe, let's all be here to watch this bill signed into law to hopefully make us even safer. This will probably be my last update for awhile. As always, should anything come up, I will report it ASAP. |
